Aa | also á, as in the word “ask”, never as in the word “able”, also (ã, â as “aa”) |
Bb | same as in English. |
Cc | like “s” before “i” or “e”, otherwise like "k” in Creole. Ç always as “s” |
Dd | same as in English, sometimes “dg” |
Ee | as in “elevated”, also (é, ê) are pronounced almost the same way. |
Ff | same as in English |
Gg | like the "s" in “pleasure”, before “i” or “e”, otherwise like the "g" in "God". |
Hh | silent most of the time. |
Ii | after vowels as “w”, elsewhere as in the word “ink”. |
Jj | as the “s” of “pleasure”. |
Kk | same as in English |
Ll | like “w” after vowels, as “l” otherwise. |
Mm | same as in English |
Nn | same as in English |
Oo | same as in English “Old”, also ( ó, ô, õ) are pronounced almost the same way. |
Pp | same as in English |
QUqu | as in “kw” |
Rr | as “r” after consonants (except n) and before a vowel or at the end of a word if the next word begins with a vowel, [kh] elsewhere. |
Ss | between vowels as “z”, and as “s” elsewhere. |
Tt | same as in English not as sharp, sometimes as (tsh) |
Uu | as in the “ultra”, never as in the word “up” or “university” |
Vv | same as in English |
Ww | as in English, sometimes as “v” |
Xx | same as in English, (sh) at the beginning of the word and before a consonant. |
Yy | same as in English although rare. |
Zz | same as in English. At the end of words it sounds as “s” in pleasure. |
Lh | sounds like (ya) |
Nh | sounds like (nya), in some places like (ya) |
